A YouTuber’s Rs 31 lakh trip to prove the Earth is flat took an unexpected twist, leading him to change his mind and accept the planet’s spherical shape.

Jeran Campanella, a YouTuber who had long been a staunch believer in the Flat Earth theory, spent a hefty $37,000 (about Rs 31.4 lakh) on an expedition to Antarctica, hoping to prove his belief that the Earth is flat. His goal was to show that Antarctica was the “ice wall” marking the edge of the flat Earth, and to disprove the idea of the 24-hour Sun.

Before the trip, Campanella believed that the Sun in Antarctica did not rise or set but stayed stationary. However, his visit to the southernmost continent completely changed his perspective.

In Antarctica, Campanella witnessed the “Midnight Sun” phenomenon, where the Sun remains visible 24 hours a day during the summer months. This is a natural occurrence in polar regions and serves as strong evidence for the Earth’s round shape.

“Sometimes you are wrong in life,” Campanella admitted in a video after the trip. “I thought there was no 24-hour Sun. I was pretty sure of it. Now, I believe there is.”

Acknowledging his mistake, he told his followers, “I know people will call me a shill for saying this, but if being honest makes me a shill, then so be it.” He also shared that the experience challenged another central belief of Flat Earth theory: the Azimuthal Equidistant (AE) map. “To me, the AE map no longer works,” he said, though he added, “That doesn’t mean I’m right about everything else.”

Campanella’s journey was part of a project called “The Final Experiment,” organized by Colorado pastor Will Duffy. The mission brought together four Flat Earthers and four “Globe Earthers” to witness the Midnight Sun in Antarctica.

The success of this expedition also debunked another Flat Earth claim: that the 1959 Antarctic Treaty prevents civilians from visiting the continent. In fact, the Treaty allows tourism and research, with the participants of ‘The Final Experiment’ showing that civilians can access Antarctica without any restrictions.
