Tomiko Itooka, World’s Oldest Person, Passes Away at 116
Tomiko Itooka, recognized as the world’s oldest living person, has passed away at the age of 116. She died on December 29, 2024, at a care home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.
Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, Itooka led an active and vibrant life. In her youth, she was a high school volleyball player and later managed her husband’s textile factory during World War II. After her husband’s death in 1979, she moved to Nara Prefecture, where she enjoyed hiking and climbing, including summiting Mount Ontake twice.
Itooka attributed her longevity to her active lifestyle and a diet that included bananas and a Japanese yogurt drink called Calpis.
In August 2024, following the passing of 117-year-old Maria Branyas Morera, Itooka was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest living person.
She is survived by a son, a daughter, and five grandchildren. Her passing marks the end of an era, as she was the last living person born in 1908.
The title of the world’s oldest living person now passes to 116-year-old Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was born 16 days after Itooka.
Itooka’s life serves as a testament to the resilience and vitality that can accompany a long and active life
