Pope Francis Passes Away at 88: A Humble Leader Remembered Worldwide
Vatican City, April 21, 2025 — Pope Francis, the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church and its first pontiff from Latin America, has passed away at the age of 88. He died peacefully at his residence, Casa Santa Marta in Vatican City, on Easter Monday following complications from a cerebral stroke.
Known for his humility, progressive views, and deep concern for the marginalized, Pope Francis led the Catholic Church through a transformative period. His final public appearance was during the Easter address on April 20, where he once again emphasized the need for global peace, notably in conflict-stricken regions like Gaza.
In the final days leading up to his passing, he met with various world leaders, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance. Despite ongoing health issues in recent years, including pneumonia and knee ailments, he remained active and engaged in papal duties until the very end.
The Pope now lies in state at St. Peter’s Basilica, where thousands of mourners have gathered to pay their last respects. His funeral is set for Saturday, April 26, with a modest ceremony in line with his personal wishes. Heads of state and religious leaders from around the world are expected to attend.
A nine-day mourning period has begun, during which cardinals will prepare for a conclave to elect the next pope. Among those being considered as possible successors are Cardinals Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines and Pietro Parolin of Italy.
Pope Francis leaves behind a powerful legacy of compassion, reform, and service to the global community.
