On January 19, 2025, a significant fire erupted at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, after a gas cylinder exploded in one of the temporary kitchens. The blaze quickly spread, engulfing 18 tents, but thanks to the swift response from firefighters, the flames were contained before causing further damage. The Maha Kumbh Mela, recognized as the world’s largest religious gathering, draws millions of devotees who come to bathe at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. The event, which began on January 13, 2025, is expected to attract over 400 million participants over six weeks.

To manage the massive influx of pilgrims, authorities established a temporary city spanning 4,000 hectares. Security has also been a priority, with around 50,000 personnel deployed to ensure the safety of attendees.

In the aftermath of the fire, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to assess the situation. The Chief Minister directed officials to provide all necessary assistance to those affected and implement stricter safety protocols.

Festival organizers have assured devotees that activities will continue uninterrupted. Enhanced safety measures are being put in place to prevent such incidents in the future.
