Meta Removes AI-Generated Profiles from Instagram and Facebook Amid User Backlash

Meta has decided to take down its AI-powered profiles on Instagram and Facebook, following backlash from users who found them unappealing. Launched in September 2023, these AI profiles featured chatbots designed to resemble popular celebrities, including Tom Brady, Charli D’Amelio, MrBeast, and Paris Hilton. Despite the company’s investment, including a $5 million payout to one influencer, the profiles failed to generate significant user interaction and were criticized as “creepy” and “weird.”

In response to the lack of engagement, Meta has ended the experiment, focusing instead on developing new tools for user-driven content creation. One such tool, AI Studio, will allow users and creators to design their own personalized AI characters. This new initiative aims to offer a more interactive and customized experience, making it easier for users to create digital avatars and engage with content in a meaningful way.

Meta’s decision marks the end of its ambitious attempt to bring AI-powered chatbots to social media. The company now plans to focus on refining its AI offerings with a more user-friendly approach, aiming to better cater to the evolving needs and preferences of its global audience.
